Dr. Martin Haulena, DVM, MSc, DACZM

Head Veterinarian, Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Center

Dr. Haulena is one of few veterinarians that is certified in wildlife medicine and focuses on marine species. He was the Staff Veterinarian at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, California for 9 years and has been Head Veterinarian at the Vancouver Aquarium since 2006.  His special interests are in the medical management of aquatic animals, particularly marine mammals, with emphasis on innovative diagnostic methods, developing safe anaesthetic protocols and improving surgical techniques. He pioneered the development of a safe darting technique for sea lions that he has used to successfully disentangle over 20 sea lions from marine debris in the last 3 years. Veterinary students and veterinarians from around the world study aquatic animal medicine each year under the direction of Dr. Haulena.  He serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University and Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia Fisheries Centre. He has authored over 55 scientific journal articles and book chapters.
