Veterinarian

General Summary of Position:

SR3 has a unique opportunity for an experienced marine mammal veterinarian to join our team as we enter the next phase of growth for our organization. SR3 is a non-profit dedicated to promoting the health and welfare of marine wildlife in the Pacific Northwest. SR3 operates a marine mammal and sea turtle rehabilitation hospital in Des Moines, WA. We also conduct rescues, stabilization, and animal transports in conjunction with stranding partners in the region.

Our veterinarian will be a key leader who is involved with many facets of the organization. This role includes internal opportunities to work with our veterinary support team to further develop and expand our clinical care program. External opportunities include representing SR3 to media outlets and to public and scientific communities, as well as supporting fundraising efforts. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the development and management of the veterinary care and husbandry program for sick, injured, and orphaned marine animals

  • Responsible for performing diagnostic, clinical, anesthetic, surgical, and other veterinary procedures in accordance with best practices and NOAA regulations

  • In conjunction with other staff members, is responsible for the management and training of veterinary support staff, animal husbandry interns, and volunteers participating in animal care

  • Responsible for conducting Necropsies and submitting tissues and reports for pathologist review

  • Responsible for keeping complete and accurate medical and necropsy records in a timely manner

  • Responsible for public speaking for community groups and scientific conferences, and communicating with donors and the media on conservation and animal care

  • Responsible for compliance with state and federal laws and regulations relating to animal care and treatment

  • Assist in the field with rescues, health assessments, and possible field research

  • Responsible for development and review of medical and husbandry protocols

  • On-call via phone or in-person for questions whenever animal care staff is on-site

  • Schedule and communicate with veterinary relief staff

  • Awareness of safety procedures for handling wild animals and working in the field

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine

  • Valid U.S. Veterinary License

  • Possess or obtain a Washington Veterinary License

  • Posses or obtain a DEA license for controlled substances

  • Must have or obtain a valid state driver’s license

  • Must have a clean driving record

  • Experience with theory and application of marine mammal disease, and rehabilitation including surgery and anesthesia

  • Ability to direct an animal care and veterinary team during clinical procedures

  • Excellent communication skills with staff, volunteers, and network partners

  • Must be able to communicate clearly and respectfully with stakeholders and partners in politically charged or trying circumstances

  • Able to work within an electronics records system

  • Experience with the methodologies and equipment for safe and humane capture of wildlife, including remote sedation

  • Must have a flexible schedule with the ability to work on call and varying work hours, including evenings and weekends as needed

  • Must be able to lift, push and pull at least 50 pounds 

Other Desired Qualifications:

  • Completion of an internship, fellowship, or residency in marine mammal or wildlife medicine.

  • Working knowledge of basic laboratory techniques

  • Understanding of water quality and animal life support systems
