Celebrate Orca Action Month! Webinar: SR³'s Killer Whale Research

In celebration of Orca Action Month, please join us for a special presentation by SR³’s Marine Mammal Research Director, Dr. Holly Fearnbach! Learn all about Dr. Fearnbach’s ongoing aerial photogrammetry research on killer whales, with a focus on the endangered population of Southern Resident killer whales (SRKWs). Holly's research uses remotely operated multicopter drones to non-invasively collect aerial images of whales that are analyzed to monitor their growth and assess their body condition, including seasonal and annual changes in condition. For SRKWs, health metrics are shared with management groups in both the US and Canada to help inform management decisions aimed at recovering the population.

There will be time to answer your most pressing killer whale questions, too!

Registration is required: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_74PIuZCDR1ioxdhLilGglg

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Aerial image of a group of L pod whales from the Southern Resident killer whale population. This group is being led by the population’s oldest member (L25, estimated to be over 90 years old), and also includes its youngest member (one year old, L125). This image was collected using a remotely controlled octocopter drone that was flown non-invasively >100ft above the whales in January 2022 under NMFS Research Permit # 22306.

Sea Pup Patrol

SR³ is partnering with the Des Moines Police Department to provide marine-themed stuffed animals — “Officer Orca,” “Sergeant Sea Otter,” “Captain Humpback,” and “Chief Seal” — to help comfort children they encounter in crisis. The proceeds from this event will go directly to work rescuing and protecting sick, injured or entangled marine animals in the Pacific Northwest.

With every $30 donation, supporters will be providing a stuffed animal to comfort a child and helping a marine animal in need, too! Donations can be made through SR³’s website.

Community members can also join SR³ and the Des Moines Police Department at the Des Moines Farmers' Market on Saturday, July 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. SR³’s marine wildlife ambulance will be there with the stuffed animals inside for supporters to choose from and place inside a Des Moines Police Department car.

A big thank you to the local businesses sponsoring this effort, including the Quarterdeck, Des Moines and Normandy Park Rotary, John L. Scott Real Estate, and Doug Myers at Edward Jones!

Killer whale research update

L118_July 2020_copyright (1).jpg

Join us to hear Dr. Holly Fearnbach’s update on SR3’s killer whale health research. Holly and her colleagues have pioneered the use of remotely controlled multi-copter drones to study the health of free-ranging whales and dolphins. Holly's talk will focus on her health assessment research which uses drone-derived aerial photographs to monitor the growth and body condition of several populations of killer whales including salmon-eating Southern, Northern and Alaska Resident killer whales, Bigg's mammal-eating "transient" killer whales, and several ecotypes of killer whales in Antarctica. A huge thank you to Patagonia Seattle for sponsoring this presentation in celebration of Orca Month. Don't miss your chance to win some awesome raffle prizes during the talk.
